Color of Onyx:
Usually black or brown with white bands. Can be orange red or honey colored rarely.
A variety of Chalcedony, onyx is made from alternating broad, flat bands of black and white. If the sample is brown and white it is called Sardonyx. If its red and white it is called Carnelian Onyx. When it is black throughout it is called black onyx. Black onyx can be natural or died.
Birthstone:
Onyx is the birthstone for July. It is also considered the astrological
birthstone for Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius and Capricorn.
History of Onyx:
The name onyx was used by the Romans for a variety of stones including alabaster, chalcedony, and what is now known as onyx marble. Roman soldiers wore sardonyx talismans engraved with heroes such as Hercules or Mars, god of war. They believed that the stone would make the wearer as brave and daring as the figured carved on it. During the Renaissance, sardonyx was believed to bring eloquence upon the wearer and was regarded with great value by public speakers and orators.
Spiritual and Physical beliefs about Onyx:
Black onyx is used in India to ward off “the evil eye”. Helps stop your energy being drained away. Helps with stress and considered the gemstone to "feel better with". It helps repel negative energy surrounding others opinions and ideas and good for entrepreneurs and inventors, create emotional stability, absorbs and flattens emotions intensity. It is used as a worry stone in the Middle East. Helps to smooth the “roller coaster of emotions” we all face at times. It is said to be helpful in overcoming a past relationship or an unwanted form of love towards somebody. Black Onyx helps you become master of your own fate, guards against negativity and helps eradicate excess energies. It can be used as a defense in many disagreements or “battles”. Black Onyx is associated with the planet Saturn and governs the 1st chakra - root chakra.
Physically:
Black Onyx helps control stress and eliminates negative thinking, increases stamina, aids childbirth, aids sexual health and self control. It is said to strengthen the heart, kidneys, nerves, capillaries, hair, eyes and nails. Black Onyx helps eradicate unwanted/undue stress, relates to the ovaries, womb and menses.
